Marina Reef Analytics: turning ocean data into decisions
This is a self-initiated concept project — not a real client engagement — created to show how we approach this kind of work. It reimagines a dense marine-monitoring platform as a fast, legible product that field scientists and port operators would actually reach for.

The challenge
Marina Reef had spent years building a genuinely powerful sensor network — buoys, tide gauges and water-quality probes feeding a constant stream of readings. The problem was never the data. It was that no one could find the signal in it. The original dashboard buried critical alerts three clicks deep, rendered charts that took seven seconds to paint, and asked marine biologists to interpret raw SQL-style tables.
Trials were stalling. Prospects loved the demo of the science and then churned during onboarding because the interface felt like a spreadsheet with a login. Marina Reef's own team was fielding support tickets for questions the UI should have answered on its own.
The approach
For a real engagement like this, we'd start in the field — shadowing port operators during a tidal event and interviewing researchers about how they actually make calls under pressure. That kind of research reshapes everything: it moves the work from designing a database viewer to designing a decision tool.
- ◆Task-first information architecture. Every screen answers one question — "is anything wrong, and where?" — before offering depth.
- ◆A calm, high-contrast visual language. Colour is reserved for status, so an anomaly reads instantly against a quiet baseline.
- ◆A high-performance charting engine. The old rendering pipeline is replaced with a canvas approach that draws thousands of points without stutter.
- ◆A shared design system. Tokens and components so an internal team could ship new views without re-litigating the basics.
One glance to the whole coastline
The new command view opens on a live map of every station, colour-coded by health. Operators triage from there — tap a station to descend into trends, thresholds and history without ever losing their place. Alerts surface where the eye lands first, and a rebuilt export flow lets researchers pull a clean, cited dataset in two clicks instead of twelve.
Because the whole product sits on a shared component library, an internal team could ship new modules without us — exactly the kind of independence the system is designed to give.
