Picture two people trying to use your website today. One is scrolling on a bright afternoon, sunlight washing out the screen, one hand busy holding a bag. The other relies on a screen reader because they are blind. On paper these seem like very different users, yet the same design choices help or block both of them. That is the quiet truth at the heart of accessibility: it is rarely about a small, distant minority. Disability is common, and it is fluid. It can be permanent, like low vision or limited hand movement. It can be temporary, like a broken wrist or an eye infection. And it can be situational, like glare, a noisy train, a slow connection, or simply tiredness at the end of a long day. Sooner or later, every visitor meets your website from a position of some limitation.
When a site is hard to read, impossible to navigate by keyboard, or built so that images carry all the meaning, we do not just inconvenience people. We quietly turn them away. The encouraging part is that fixing this rarely requires exotic tools or a huge budget. Most of the wins come from clear, considered basics, and those same basics make the experience better for absolutely everyone.
Why it's not optional
There are three reasons to take accessibility seriously, and they reinforce one another. The first is simply that it is the right thing to do. A business that invites the public online is inviting all of the public, and a website that excludes people with disabilities is doing the digital equivalent of building a shop with only a staircase at the door. Nobody sets out to do that on purpose; it happens through inattention. Attention is the fix.
The second reason is that expectations are hardening into requirements. Around the world, accessibility is increasingly written into law, procurement rules, and contract terms. Government tenders and larger enterprise clients often ask suppliers to meet a recognised standard, and the standard nearly everyone points to is WCAG, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. WCAG defines three conformance levels: A is the bare minimum, AA is the widely accepted target for real-world sites, and AAA is the strictest and often impractical to meet everywhere. For most businesses, aiming for AA is the sensible, defensible goal. If you ever want to bid for institutional work, being able to say you meet AA is quickly becoming table stakes rather than a bonus.
The third reason is commercial. Accessible pages tend to be well-structured pages, and search engines reward structure. Meaningful headings, descriptive links, and text that machines can actually read are the same signals that help your SEO. Captions make videos searchable. Alt text gives images context. In short, the work you do for a screen reader user also helps Google understand you. Good accessibility and good discoverability are two views of the same solid foundation.
There is a local dimension worth naming too. Here in Coimbatore, and across India, your audience is genuinely diverse. Many people reach you on small or older phones, over patchy mobile data, in more than one language, and with a wide range of reading confidence. A page that is light, legible, and forgiving serves that reality far better than a heavy, cluttered one. Designing for access is not a Western checkbox; it is a straightforward way to reach the people already trying to find you.
The quick wins
You do not need to overhaul everything at once. A handful of focused improvements addresses the majority of common barriers.
Contrast and colour
Text must stand clearly against its background. Pale grey on white or thin type on a busy photo may look elegant on a designer's calibrated monitor, but it disappears in sunlight or for anyone with reduced vision. WCAG asks for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal body text. Just as important, never rely on colour alone to carry meaning. If a form field turns red to show an error, pair it with an icon and a short message, so people who cannot distinguish the colour still understand what went wrong. Beyond contrast, the following habits cover most of the remaining ground:
- Write descriptive alt text for images that convey information, and mark purely decorative images so assistive tech can skip them.
- Use real text instead of text baked into images, so it can be zoomed, translated, read aloud, and indexed.
- Make sure everything works with keyboard navigation alone, since many people never touch a mouse.
- Keep focus states visible, so keyboard users can always see where they are on the page.
- Give every form field a proper label, not just a placeholder that vanishes on typing.
- Write descriptive links such as "read our pricing guide" rather than a bare "click here".
- Provide captions or transcripts for video and audio so the content is available without sound.
How to test it
Testing does not require a lab. Start with your own keyboard. Put the mouse aside and try to move through your homepage using only the Tab key to advance, Shift+Tab to go back, and Enter to activate. If you get lost, cannot see where the focus is, or get trapped inside a menu, you have found real problems that real users hit daily.
Next, meet a screen reader. Most devices ship with one built in, such as VoiceOver on Apple products and Narrator or NVDA on Windows. You do not need to master it; just switch it on and listen to how your page is announced. Do the headings make sense in order? Do the links describe where they lead? A few minutes of listening is deeply instructive.
Then let automated tools do the heavy scanning. Lighthouse, built into Chrome, and browser extensions like axe will flag missing labels, weak contrast, and structural gaps in seconds. Treat their scores as a helpful floor, not a finish line. Automation catches perhaps a third of issues; the rest need a human deciding whether the experience actually makes sense. Combine the machine pass with your own manual checks and you cover far more than either alone.
Accessibility is just good design
Strip away the terminology and accessibility turns out to be a description of quality itself. Clear contrast, legible type, sensible structure, predictable navigation, and content that does not depend on any single sense are simply the marks of a website that respects the person using it. The captions that help a deaf visitor also help the commuter with the sound off. The keyboard support that a motor-impaired user needs also speeds up power users. The clean heading structure that guides a screen reader also lifts your search ranking.
So treat accessibility not as a compliance chore bolted on at the end, but as a lens you hold up from the first sketch. Build it in early and it costs little; retrofit it late and it costs far more.
